Cleaning, sustainability and cost of living crisis: what you can do

Sustainable cleaning practices can be difficult even when we’re not in the midst of a cost of living crisis, but the benefits of shopping ecologically and avoiding those toxic chemicals are worth it! This blog contains a few tips on how to maintain a clean home and a clearer conscience for doing your bit for the environment.

1: Reusable products and materials!

One of our key business practices is ecologically friendly cleaning, and this combines both our use of products, our purchases and the cleaning tools. To avoid unnecessary wastage, we use microfibre cloths for all of our cleaning (where appropriate) which reduces the number of cloths or sponges getting binned after a clean! We also cut down our sponges when we can. Sustainability is about more than the actual product - go for the ones that combine environmental ingredients with reusable or recyclable packaging and long-lasting and effective results.

2: Stick to natural ingredients!

We know that buying sustainably can be more expensive in many cases, but with a bit of research you’d be surprised by the amount of budget products that are organic or contain naturally derived ingredients. You’ll find that products composed of minerals and natural ingredients such as sodium carbonate will gently but effectively cleanse your surfaces, avoiding the harsh treatment and smells of mainstream, chemically harmful products.

3: Avoid the mainstream or supermarket ‘eco’ brands!

As Sustainably Lazy puts it: “having one eco-friendly range shows the company is only in it for the money, not because they want to make products that are safe for people and the environment.” These products are often not cruelty-free either. Some great alternative brands include Ecodoo, Bio-D, Sonett and The Little Cottage Cleaning Company! 😉
